MORNING ROUTINE

I have noticed a huge change in my mood and the nature of my day when I started my morning routine.

Just because my schedule worked out this way, my first responsibility of the day does not start until 1:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. While I freaked out at first because I didn’t really know what to do with that much time in the morning, I implemented a morning routine and it has held pretty strong for the past four weeks.

The following is my morning routine for Tuesdays and Thursdays, but below the next photo, I have a general list of things you can do to assure that you have a chill, yet productive start to the day.

MY MORNING ROUTINE (Tuesday/Thursday)

7:30 am

I have my alarm set to 8:00 am, but I usually wake up naturally around 7:30 am every day. I take this time to wake up a little bit, go through my phone (and try not to spend too much on social media- I usually just go through snaps people sent and Instagram) and just enjoy laying in my bed.

7:45 am

Finally, I muster up the motivation to swing out of bed, put on my slippers, and walk on over to the kitchen. I brew my cup of coffee and I go back to my desk with coffee in hand.

While at my desk, I catch up on YouTube videos, plan out my day, make a to-do list, and write out thoughts I have, and check my horoscope like it’s the daily newspaper. I’m not an avid believer in horoscopes, but I like reading it to check out the vibe the universe is sending my way.

8:30 am

I change into leggings and a sports bra, roll out my yoga mat in front of my balcony doors, and get in a nice stretch for 20 minutes.

Out of all the places in my apartment, I like to practice yoga in front of my balcony doors because the morning light just peeps through the windows and I can feel the sunshine while I stretch. I also take the time on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to supplement my workout routine. I lift at the gym on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so Tuesdays and Thursdays are my days to loosen out my muscles and go light on my body while still moving around.

8:50 am

After getting in a nice stretch, I sit facing the balcony doors, and I meditate. This is my time to just breathe, reflect, and be in the moment. I also try to become content with the noises around me like the birds chirping and how the sun feels on my skin.

I noticed that when I meditate in the morning, I have calmer start to my day and I am less likely to be stressed/high-strung as I go about my day. It is a time for me to kind establish how the day is going to go.

A little after 9:00 am

I roll up my yoga mat, throw on a sweatshirt, and I make myself a hardy, little breakfast. I try to start my day fresh and full (I have a more detailed paragraph of what I eat for breakfast in the “Other Tips and Tricks” section).

Sometimes, I even brew myself a second cup of coffee– okay, my coffee is very light so I can go for two cups within one morning. I’m not a coffee addict. lol yes I am what am I even saying. Anyway, back to the routine. I turn on HGTV and watch people fix up some houses while enjoying my breakfast.

I even take this time to journal and get my thoughts out so my head isn’t clouded as I go about my day.

9:30-10:00ish am

It really depends on the day and whether or not I have appointments or meetings in the morning, but between 9:30-10:00 am, I get myself off the couch, tidy up the area a little bit, and prepare for the day– shower, put “real” clothes on, and leave my apartment– this part of my day usually takes about 45 minutes.

OTHER TIPS AND TRICKS

“Do Not Disturb” Mode.

The one thing I love about my phone is that it has a “Do Not Disturb” mode. I have it set so it automatically goes on “Do Not Disturb” from 10:00 pm to 9:00 am. This way, my phone isn’t buzzing away and distracting me while I meditate, drink my coffee, or whatever I am doing in the morning. I like this time to disconnect and just be with myself. I’ll send the occasional text or snap my breakfast, but I enjoy the time I am not glued to my phone and expecting texts and emails.

Read.

Read a motivational book, a fictional book, a memoir… read something you enjoy to start off your day. Start your day mindfully, instead of mindlessly.

Make your bed.

I like to make my bed in the morning for a couple reasons. The first being, when my space is clean, I feel like I have a tidier mind. Also, when I get back to my apartment after a long day, I just want to fall into bed without having to make my bed.

Drink water with lemon.

I am guilty of not drinking enough water throughout my day, and I really want to be that person that wakes up, fills a mason jar with cold water, and squeezes a lemon in, but I’m not. Wish I was. Anyway, it’s good to be hydrated, peeps. Drink water.

Food.

* Remember, I am not a nutritionist. I’m just going off of my experience and what I like to do.

I’d suggest eating fresh foods in the morning over something heavy, so your body is feeling its best.

What I eat in the morning (not all at once lol. on different mornings):

  • Vanilla Greek Yogurt w/ granola and blueberries
  • Omelette (2 eggs, spinach, onions, mushrooms, cheese) w/ half a bagel and cream cheese
  • Banana smoothie bowl (frozen banana, Fairlife Milk, peanut butter) topped with granola, shredded coconut, chia seeds, banana slices, and blueberries
  • Piece of toast with one fried egg on top and cheese.
  • Full bagel with cream cheese– for those days when I skip breakfast and I get something at the campus coffee shop.

Mornings are my favorite because the day ahead holds so much potential and you can decide what it is going to be like.

I hope ya’ll have a cozy start to your day~~
